Quan Yin

Quan Yin

This small statue of Quan Yin cracked and broken, yet bearing such compassion and composure, seems like a fitting symbol for our fractured humanity. The statue is from the Green Gulch Zen Center in California.

Until recently I had no idea of who made it or how it came to be where it is. Now I know it was made by Victoria Fahey and represents a moment in her long struggle to create a Quan Yin that matched a Ming Dynasty statue that her grandmother had had. The statue pictured here was brought to Green Gulch by the Soto Zen teacher Yvonne Rand.
