Man and Woman Viewing Hitler-Christ Child Transformation

Man and Woman Viewing Hitler-Christ Child Transformation

This is a man and woman viewing a large photograph in the SFMOMA. The picture itself is apparently of a crowd of men gazing in adoration of the Madonna and Christ Child. But the photograph is a straight derivative of an original photograph from the Roger Viollet Collection in which what here is a Madonna and Child was in fact Hitler, and the viewers enthusiastic Nazis. The original photograph is from 1932 and was surely posed propaganda. I don't know who the original photographer was (though the image seems to be owned by Life) or the artist who produced the transformed version seen here. The pose of the Madonna and Child is perhaps taken from some much earlier painting. Any suggestions on these issues would be appreciated. For more see Getty Images/Roger Viollet Collection.
